Welcome to Smivs' Oolite homepage

Oolite Logo

Oolite is a space combat and trading game, and is a modern re-imagining of the classic 'Elite'. Elite was hugely popular some 25 years ago and was available for all the popular computers of the day, such as Amigas, Commodore 64s and BBC micros and the NES. It re-defined space trading games and its significance is still widely recognised.
Oolite stays true to the 'Elite' spirit and canon, but expands on it as well, making the most of today's computers' superior processing power and graphics abilities.
Although fundamentally quite a simple game, it is compelling and absorbing. The game's open-ended nature and flexibility keep it fresh no matter how much you play, and the game lends itself to both short and long gaming sessions.
It is cross-platform, with versions for Linux, Mac and Windows, and is constantly under development by an enthusiastic community, meaning it just keeps getting better and better.
Being open-source, it is easy for anyone to change aspects of the game using simple text and graphics editors, and there are literally hundreds of Oolite eXpansion Packs (OXPs) which add new ships, missions and eye candy to the basic game.

Accessories OXP

Accessories OXP re-textures the Stations and all the non-ship objects for a more realistic look. This OXP features some beautiful non-shader lighting effects.

Aliens OXP

This OXP adds mysterious and unknown Alien ships to the Ooniverse. There are three varieties, and they will only appear rarely, and in different locations based on their behaviour and characteristics.

Battle Damage OXP

This OXP adds 'battle damage' to player ships to aid immersion and add realism. The damage must be repaired quickly to avoid problems.
For those using Smivs'Shipset, this also adds visible damage that can be seen in the External Views.

Better Screens OXP

This OXP improves the 'in-game' GUI screens by adding a subtly textured background and some detailing. If you like simple, un-cluttered GUI screens but find 'just black' a bit boring this could be for you.

Clippers OXP

The Boa and Python Clippers are fast, combat-capable transports. They are based on the standard ships but have extra engines fitted at the expense of cargo space, and feature external fuel tanks. They can both be fully equipped and both are great all-rounders.

Cloak Repair

An OXP to make the Cloaking Device repairable at TL 15 Worlds for 50,000Cr. This will replace your damaged cloak with a service exchange item.

Combat HUD

A more logically laid-out adaptation of the standard HUD. All the vital combat information is grouped together on the right side, and the console and comms messages have been re-located to give a clear view.

Contractor Mk II OXP

The Contractor is a fast, tough 'stealth' ship favoured by Bounty Hunters and Hit-Men. Buyable but very expensive!

Cup of Tea OXP

The Express Tea Maker will make you a lovely cup of tea in just 15 seconds.

Delightful Docking OXP

Improves the docking experience with slower rotation of the stations, a view of the station while queueing and a nice orchestral recording of the Blue Danube docking music.

This OXP adds Giant Space Pizzas near to the Sun in thirteen systems around all eight Galaxies. You can go to the Visitor Centre, and there is a special award for those who visit all thirteen pizzas.

Jellybaby Dispenser OXP

A handy Jellybaby dispenser for your ship's cockpit. Be warned, though, the machine can go out of control and give you more Jellybabies than you would ever want!

Smivs' ShipSet

Smivs'Shipset is a revolutionary re-texture set of all the standard Oolite ships, featuring a realistic look, beautiful non-shader lighting effects, a wider variety of textures and exciting visual effects.
"See them hurt...watch them die!"

Star-Jelly OXP

Star-jellies are strange translucent creatures that can often be found in asteroid fields. They live and grow by absorbing Quirium, and therefore it is best to leave them alone!

TOGY Memorials OXP

TOGY Memorials is a plug-in for the Tionisla Orbital Graveyard OXP which adds memorials to deceased Commanders within the monument field at Tionisla.

ToughGuys 4 OXP

ToughGuys OXP makes pirates tougher to restore balance to the game for experienced Commanders with a good 'Iron-Ass' ship. The hunters and traders also get upgrades so they can cope! You will encounter ships with a wide range of equipment and weapons upgrades, and varying degrees of piloting skill.

WonderWorm OXP

The Wonderworm is a crazy uber-ship based on future tech. It is player-buyable, and the OXP also features Time Raiders, criminals who come from the future to plunder the past.

An epic mission spanning all eight galaxies. You will be asked to gather the intelligence and equipment necessary to avert a full-scale Thargoid invasion of GalCop space. Are you man enough to save the Ooniverse?

YellOo Cabs OXP

YellOo Cabs adds luxury limo-taxis to the Ooniverse. These will be seen frequently in-game, and are player-buyable.

Smivs' OXPs - Full details and downloads

Accessories v2.1 OXP

This OXP adds some eye-candy to the game. The standard Oolite graphics are fairly bland, so in this OXP all the non-ship objects have been re-textured to improve them with a more detailed and realistic look and feature non-shader lighting effects. The original Oolite models have been used and this preserves the originality of the game...the objects are the same shape, but much better looking!

This OXP contains all the Oolite non-ship objects such as Stations and cargo containers and adds the Icosahedron Station and the Q-Bomb to the Start-up demo ships display.

Accessories is the companion to Smivs'Shipset, and together the two OXPs replace all the 'core' Oolite objects. Accessories can also be used as a supplement to the other various Ship replacement OXPs.

You can see all the 'Accessories' and the ships from Smivs'Shipset here on Youtube.

Aliens

This OXP adds mysterious and unknown Alien ships to the Ooniverse. There are three varieties, and they will only appear rarely, and in different locations based on their behaviour and characteristics.

These are new races and are unknown to GalCop, so your Scanner Targeting Enhancer will not be able to identify them. They will be named simply as 'Alien', and will normally appear as 'Clean' unless they have already caused trouble.

You might get an alert message from the Galcop Main Station if one has been sighted in the System you have just entered, but you will not know what it is or where it is, and it might not even be there at all.

All three have very different behaviours. Some will be aggressive while others may be very peaceful. Two have 'Chameleon' characteristics and will change their appearance in certain situations, and one also has a unique weapon.

Screenshot

Half the fun will be to work out what these Aliens do and where they are likely to be found, so to tell more here would spoil the surprise!

Battle Damage OXP

This OXP adds an immersive factor into the game.

When your shields are gone, your opponents' lasers are directly hitting your hull, but in the 'core' game this has no obvious impact or repercussions. This OXP adds this 'realism' into the game by causing damage to your ship's hull, which if not repaired promptly will lead to problems such as fuel leaks and mis-jumps.

If you take an un-shielded hit, a console message will alert you to the fact with a warning:- 'WARNING! HULL DAMAGE' and further hits will be notified with another console message:- 'Hull taking further damage'.

Screenshot

Upon docking, someone will point out this damage to you and urge you to have emergency repairs made at the Ship Outfitters (F3). Here you will find 'Emergency Hull Repairs' offered for 75Cr. These repairs are fairly basic and consist of new Duralium plates welded over the damaged areas to ensure structural integrity and airtightness where needed. Repairs will take around six to eight hours of game time, after which your ship will be spaceworthy again. Any damaged equipment will need to be repaired seperately.

Screenshot

Screenshot

If you do not have repairs made, you may experience mis-jumps or fuel leaks as a consequence of the damage. If you launch damaged the station staff will sometimes overlook this if the damage is not too severe although you may be reminded about the damage when you next dock. Sometimes the station you are leaving will point out the damage but let you go on your way, or you may encounter problems on launching and be urged to re-dock immediately for repairs, and you might even get a telling-off from one of the Dock officials and a small fine.

Screenshot

If you are offered a Maintenance Overhaul, this WILL include any emergency repairs. 'Emergency Hull Repairs' will also be offered, so you can still have repairs made even if you wish to defer the Overhaul at this time. Choose one or the other.

Battle Damage (for Smivs') OXP

This special edition has extra features to compliment those in Smivs'Shipset, and will work with both 'Add' and 'Replace' versions of Smivs'Shipset v4.2.

As well as the features above, this version also adds visible damage to the player ship if it is one of the Smivs'Shipset core ships*.
When using the Exernal Views your ship will appear damaged as soon as it takes an un-shielded hit and will remain damaged until repairs are made.

* This OXP is only applicable if you fly a 'core' ship from Smivs'Shipset.

If you are flying a Cobra Mk III with a custom texture made using the 'kit' supplied with Smivs'Shipset, you will need to make a 'damaged' version of your custom texture. Instructions and all necessary files are included in the OXP pack. This is only necessary for custom-textured Cobra Mk IIIs, all other player ships will use the in-built 'damaged' textures from Smivs'Shipset.

Clippers OXP

This Oolite Expansion Pack (OXP) adds a new class of ship to the game. This ships are player-purchasable, and also appear in the game as traders. Due to the nature and cost of the ship it was not considered appropriate to introduce a 'Pirate' version.
Current version is v1.3.2. Requires Oolite v1.77.

Screenshots of Clipper ships

Inspired by the great Clipper ships of Old Earth's 19th Century the Boa II Clipper was developed by the Gerege Federation Space Works as a result of extensive market research carried out for them by respected pollsters Moori. The research indicated that there was an un-filled niche in the market for a very fast combat-capable transport, a ship capable of covering great distances comfortably, safely, but most of all, quickly.
To keep development time and costs down it was decided to adapt the proven hull of the Boa Class Cruiser, rather than design a new ship from scratch. As the Boa CC was strong, capacious, and very manoeuvrable, little needed to be done other than increase the engine power. And they did this with style! By enlarging the engine room they were able to shoe-horn in a third Stardrive, thus giving the Clipper an immediate 50% power increase over the Class Cruiser, and a top speed of a highly creditable 0.362 LM.
The trade-off is a 25 ton reduction in cargo space, but the remaining 150 tons capacity was considered more than adequate.

Following the success of their Clipper upgrade to the Boa 2, the Gerege Federation SpaceWorks felt that a similar upgrade to a smaller freighter would also be worthwhile. Following negotiations with Whatt and Pritney, they obtained a Licence to adapt Python hulls to 'Clipper' specification.
The Clipper 'concept' is for fast transporters capable of delivering cargo quickly over vast distances, and it is also considered important that these ships can hold their own against bandit and pirate attacks.
To these ends, both Python and Boa Clippers have sacrificed some cargo space to allow fitment of extra drive units allowing higher top speeds. GFS favour the DeClapton and Layla Quark-scintillation StarDrive as these units are powerful yet compact and are extremely reliable. In the case of the Python Clipper, extra defensive options were also made possible.
In keeping with their role as long distance express transports, both Clipper models are equipped as standard with Fuel Scoops and Heat Shielding, and with the introduction of the Python variant external secondary fuel tanks were introduced across the range. These hold 4LY of fuel and this can be moved into the main tanks when their level falls below 3LY. Owners of Series One Boa Clippers are offered a cost-price retro-fit of these tanks.

This OXP also shares the interactive features of Smivs'Shipset.
NPCs will show visible damage when they throw sparks, and the ship will progressively become derelict if the pilot ejects. They also have the enhanced Death Effects feature, the big dramatic explosions.
This OXP is also compatible with BattleDamage OXP, which will add visible player-ship damage if the shields fail and the hull takes direct hits. The 'forSmivs' version must be used for this feature to work.
The Clippers have a custom HUD, an adaptation of the standard HUD which is designed with combat in mind, and features re-positioned console and comms messages.

Python Clipper

The Python Clipper has two Drive units with a reduction in cargo capacity of 25TC over the original Python, leaving a hold of 75TC capacity. The original Python was also noted for its lack of modern equipment options and poor armaments and these issues have been addressed in the Clipper. The Python Clipper has one less energy bank than the original Python (six rather than seven) and no cargo expansion option, but the space freed-up has allowed much more powerful rechargers to be fitted and also allows for four missile pylons, double that of the Python. Military Shield Boosters can also be fitted to the Clipper. Performance, handling and top speed are all noticeably better than a standard Python.

Boa Clipper

The Boa Clipper has three Stardrives and a cargo capacity of 150TC. Top speed and handling is improved over the Boa 2 but all other specifications are the same. With a full range of equipment options available and eight energy banks with efficient rechargers already included, there was little room for improvement over the standard Boa 2.

NB. This OXP replaces the Boa Clipper OXP. Existing users of Boa Clipper should find the move to this OXP is seemless, but should read the readme for full details on the change-over, and how to upgrade their ship to External Fuel Tanks.

Combat HUD

Combat HUD

The Combat HUD is an improved version of the basic HUD, which has been optimised for combat situations - the layout is tidier and more logical making it easier to use.

The main Scanner is green (rather than red) and the Compass is a gentler shade of blue. If a scanner targeting enhancement is fitted the reticule will turn red when the target is centered.

The vital information (Laser temperature, shields and Energy) has been grouped together on the right side to allow at-a-glance assessment during combat. The scoop indicator, status light, joystick sensitivity indicator and the Aegis indicator are on the right side next to the scanner. The console messages are also displayed here, above the gauges.

On the left side of the main scanner are the speed, pitch and roll, fuel, cabin temperature and altimeter gauges. The Compass and Scanner Zoom are also here, and the comms messages will be displayed above these gauges.
The clock is centrally positioned above the scanner.

The Combat HUD will comfortably acommodate up to Eight energy banks and Sixteen pylons, making it suitable for all available ships.

If your current player-ship comes with a built-in HUD this will need to be over-ridden. Using a text-editor (NOT Notepad!) open the shipdata.plist file (in the 'Config' folder) of your ship's OXP, where you will find a line like this:-

hud = "***hud.plist";

where the stars are probably the name of the OXP ship. Comment-out this line by placing two slashes and a space before it, thus :-

// hud = "***hud.plist";

When you start Oolite, hold down the 'shift' key untill you see the spinning Cobra, and your HUD will be installed and working.

Contractor Mk II

This Oolite Expansion Pack (OXP), developed by Smivs, adds a new class of ship, the Contractor, to the game. This ship occassionally appears in the game as a Bounty Hunter, and rarely as a Pirate. The Contractor is player-buyable.

Contractor (screenshot)

The Contractor is an extreme example of niche-marketing, specifically targeted at Bounty Hunters, Hit-Men and Assassins, and it is without doubt one of the most lethal ships ever conceived. Inevitably a few have also found their way into Pirate hands.

The Contractor is shrouded in mystery, and little is known about the ship, its armaments or its capabilities. They are thought to originate on a moon orbiting a planet in the anarchic Retila System in Galaxy 2, where it is believed an un-holy alliance of Mafia, Triad and Pirate groups have established a covert shipyard where the Contractor is built to special order, drawing together stolen technologies from across the Ooniverse.

Even less is known about the origins of the design, although the story goes that it was reverse engineered from a stolen Military prototype. Although the incident was hushed up at the time, it is common knowledge that a Top Secret prototype was stolen from a Naval Base in Galaxy 1 and soon after was taken to Galaxy 2. It then disappeared for a few weeks during which time it is thought it was stripped down and examined in detail. What happened next is unclear but the prototype was eventually tracked down and destroyed by a keen young Jameson, out to make a name for himself.

"What Spaceship" magazine recently published an interview with an anonymous owner (thought by many to be the notorious Bounty Hunter BOoba Fett) which gave some details of the Contractor and it's specification. If true, the details are as follows:

Standard equipment is rumoured to include Front-mounted Military laser, ECM, and Fuel Injectors, and all options are available, although the 2 TC cargo capacity cannot be expanded. The Contractor features a unique HUD with a clear, combat-biased layout. Unable to reproduce the Naval drive unit fitted to the stolen prototype, the builders instead opted for three Muon Schism drives from the MitsOobishi Motor Company based at Xevera in Galaxy five. These compact yet powerful engines give the Contractor a very respectable top speed of 0.45LM.

The Contractor is believed to have some limited stealth capability thanks to organic hull plating developed by the Marine Trench Company making it almost invisible to the naked eye, although most scanners will detect it. Bounty Hunter ships will often be fitted with Cloaks and Scanner Jammers.

The Mk II has been refined even more into a combat vessel sacrificing all but two TC of cargo space to add two missiles over the original ZZ1 model. Following feedback from users the handling has been improved and the notoriously 'twitchy' controls have been smoothed out for the Mk II.

Although extremely rare, any Contractor that you might encounter is well worth avoiding, particularly if you are an Offender or Fugitive...remember, this is the ship-of-choice for some of the most ruthless and dangerous men in the Ooniverse, the Bounty Hunters.

Contractors have awesome firepower, most will have Military shields and energy units, and they are amongst the fastest ships available. If you can afford it, you can own a Contractor, and occassionally one will be found for sale at ship-dealers on higher tech-level worlds.

Please Note

Contractor Mk II is a re-release, replacing Contractor-ZZ1 v4.0.
This updated version features an new, darker and organic 'skin' for the ship, new lighting effects, and improved modelling with a gun and engine nacelles added to the base model.
If you have installed an earler version it is recommended that you upgrade to this version to enjoy Contractor at its best.

Current version :- 1.2 released 24th January, 2013.

Cup of Tea OXP (v1.1)

You can buy a Tea maker anywhere for just 100Cr. The Tea Maker is supplied with 25 'T-pods'. A 'T-pod' is a disposable mug containing all the ingredients for your cup of tea. The Tea Maker then boils water, adds it to your tea and brews it. When installed it will make you a lovely cup of tea in just 15 seconds.

Your Tea maker is primable equipment - 'Shift-n' to prime, and 'n' to activate. Console messages will tell you how your tea is progressing, and a gong will alert you when it is ready. You will also be told when you are using your last 'T-pod', and the Tea Maker will not work once these are all gone. Upon docking you can buy another 25 'T-pods' from the ship Outfitters. Choose between Tea, Tea with Milk, Tea with Sugar and Tea with Milk and Sugar. 25 'T-pods' will cost 10Cr.

Delightful Docking OXP

This OXP adds some small but popular improvements to docking and using the Docking Computer in Oolite. Any part can be easily removed if not required.

DETAILS

Autopilot - When docking by autopilot you will often be placed in a queue. Normally your ship is just 'parked' as it is. This OXP causes your ship to be aligned with the station while you wait, allowing you to watch the station and the ships docking or leaving.

Rotation - This OXP slows the rotation of the stations. This is not to make docking easier, but rather to make the stations look better, as the slower rotation looks more realistic and makes the stations appear larger. These changes only affect the default stations (Coriolis, Dodecahedron and Icosahedron) and do not affect any OXP stations.

Music - This OXP also includes an orchestral recording of the Blue Danube (the Docking Computer music), which adds a bit of class to the whole docking experience. Full details are in the readme in the Music folder.

ExtraFuelTanks OXP

For centuries, all ships have been limited to 7LY of fuel. This is mainly because the maximum possible jump is 7LY, a limit imposed by simple physics. However as fuel injectors became more popular it soon became clear that extra fuel was a desirable feature.

So the Beinbaagh Fabrication and Ductwork Co of Lequteor in Galaxy Four decided to develop a range of extra fuel tanks that could be fitted to all ships. They designed a modular system that involves several small tanks which are custom-built into those little corners and recesses that nothing useful would normally fit in. This way they are able to fit the tanks internally without taking up any useable space, and they are then plumbed together and linked to the main tank. Although very space-efficient, this method does require a lot of work so these tanks are both expensive and time-consuming to fit, but once installed they can be refilled and used repeatedly.

BFD decided to offer two standard installations, an emergency reserve tank which holds 1LY of fuel, and auxiliary tanks holding 3LY of fuel. These can be installed in any make and model of ship.

ExtraFuelTanks OXP

Current version is v1.4

This OXP adds buyable extra fuel tanks. These are primable equipment - 'Shift-n' to prime, and 'n' to activate. There are two types of tank available.
The Reserve Tank holds 1LY of Liquified Quirium Gas, and the reserve fuel can be added to your main tank when it contains less than 1LY of fuel.
The Auxiliary Tank holds 3LY of Liquified Quirium Gas, and this can be added to the main tank when it contains less than 3LY of fuel.
You may only fit one type of tank, so decide which will be the best for you. The 'Reserve' is an emergency top-up for when you are almost out of fuel. The 'Auxiliary' is much more of a game-changer allowing you to be much more flexible in terms of refuelling by docking or sunskimming.
You can buy a Full Tank (Cr 10 000 for the 'Reserve' and Cr 50 000 for the Auxiliary) from any TL10+ station. This will appear on the F5 screen as 'Reserve Fuel Tank' or 'Auxiliary Fuel Tank'.
The fuel can be moved into the main tank when required providing the main tank contains less than the specified amount of fuel. The F5 screen will then show the Reserve or Auxiliary tank to be 'Empty'.
After use you can refill the tank. 'Refill Reserve Tank' for Cr 10 or 'Refill Auxiliary Tank' for Cr 30.
If you have a Reserve Tank, you can upgrade to an Auxiliary Tank. The cost of this conversion is Cr 40 000.

GalDrivePod v1.3

GalDrivePod OXP adds a new piece of equipment, a portable Galactic Hyperdrive unit.

The portable Galactic Hyperdrive can be pylon mounted for use when a standard drive is not available. It is activated the same way as missiles and mines, and once activated/installed works the same way as a regular Galactic Hyperdrive.
The Portable Galactic Hyperdrive Unit is available from Tech Level 12 and above, and cost 7 500 Credits. You can have as many of them as you have spare Pylons, and they can be dis-mounted and sold.
The Portable Galactic Hyperdrive Unit cannot be accidently activated when a standard Galactic Hyperdrive is already installed, and a console warning will remind you that you already have a standard Galactic Hyperdrive fitted.
N.B. This OXP allows for Galactic Jumps into 'un-reachable' systems that would normally be inaccessible. To avoid citizens accidentally getting stranded in these systems, GalCop have placed Wormhole Supressors at these Worlds which prevent a wormhole from being opened to them. The GalDrivePod has an over-ride circuit which cancels the effects of the Wormhole Supressor, thus allowing you to use a normal Galactic Hyperdrive to reach these systems, and the GalDrivePod can then be used to leave again. This will only be possible when you have a GalDrivePod installed.

Below are a couple of fun things you can do with these.

Record attempt:
You can attempt to set a record time for a 'round-trip' through all the galaxies. Included with this OXP is a save file which will give you an Anaconda equipped with a Galactic Hyperdrive and seven GalDrivePods, docked at Lave in Galaxy One.
The idea is to launch and immediately GalJump to G2, then arm and deploy a GalDrivePod and jump to G3 and keep repeating this process until you are back at Lave in G1. Take a screenshot just before you launch, then take a screenshot of the 'Galaxy Map' screen (F6/F6) as you emerge in each galaxy. As soon as you dock back at Lave take another. By comparing the time (on the HUD) between the first and last screenshots you will see how quickly you did the whole round trip. The intermediate screenshots are your photographic verification that you did the whole trip.
The Benchmark time is 35 minutes 29 seconds (game-time). You can register your record attempt on the GalDrivePod thread on the Oolite Forum.

Lost Worlds Grand Tour:
The tour starts in Galaxy 6. Before you set off, buy a GalDrivePod, then starting at Adien in the bottom-left corner of galaxy 6, jump to the systems on the 'wrong side' of the Great Rift in Galaxy 7, where you can experience planets that you would not otherwise ever see. There are a wide variety of Government types and Tech levels from a nice TL 1 Anarchy, up to some stable, Industrial worlds.
You must buy a new Galactic Hyperdrive and GalDrivePod in this region, then by going down to Onteised in the very bottom-left corner, Galactic jump to the near-mythical World of Oresrati in Galaxy 8. Oresrati is remote and isolated, and with a tech Level so low you cannot buy a Galactic Hyperdrive unit there.
Previously this has made any trip to Oresrati a dead-end one-way trip, but no more! Now you can return to Galaxy 1 using the portable Galactic Hyperdrive unit.

Giant Space Pizza

Screenshot of Giant Space Pizza

This OXP adds Giant Space Pizzas near to the Sun in thirteen systems spread through all eight Galaxies. Each Giant Space Pizza has a visitor centre between the planet and the sun. Each time you dock at a Visitor Centre your visit is recorded, and if you visit all thirteen pizzas, you will get a special award. The Visitor Centre also features a 'History of the Giant Space Pizza' presentation.

Pizza systems are marked on the short- and long-range charts, and the planet descriptions include mention of them. You will be reminded about the Pizza when you first dock at the main station.

You do not need to visit the main station at a Pizza System, and can fly directly to the Visitor Centre if you prefer. These have a 'V' space compass legend. You can start visiting the Pizzas in whichever galaxy you are in, and they do not have to be visited in a set order - just visit them as part of your normal travels around the Eight.

Of course if you wanted to treat this as a 'Tour' mission and deliberately visit them all in a relatively short timescale you can do that as well.

History of the Giant Space Pizza

Many hundreds of years ago the Trumble species had an advanced technological civilisation, but were suffering from acute over-population and food shortages. Due to the remote (and now forgotten) location of their homeworld they had no contact with other races, and were tied to their home-planet. While the Trumbles did have space travel their attempts to explore space were in their infancy, and their ships were crude.

They tried to solve their food shortages by bio-engineering fast-growing giant foodstuffs but these experiments were largely un-successful, and eventually ended in disaster. An accidental release of some genetically-modified blancmange left the Trumble homeworld un-inhabitable within a year and caused the Trumble Diaspora, a last desperate attempt to save the Trumble race by evacuating the planet and searching for a new home. However most of the Diaspora ships were lost during the attempt, which marked the end of the Trumble civilisation.

The few surviving Trumbles did eventually find a home in GalCop space where the indigenous species at first thought they were 'cute' and kept them as pets. They started to re-populate, but having lost their knowledge base and without any functioning society, they were no more than a collection of individuals, and before long their runaway breeding even led to them being considered vermin by many of their adoptive hosts.

One of the lost Diaspora ships was the "Preewootre'ill". Against regulations a Trumble food scientist smuggled a small specimen of his work, a megapizza, on board just before she was launched. Unfortunately the pizza grew rapidly on board the ship and eventually caused its destruction while it was in witchspace, leaving hundreds of pieces of the megapizza scattering into interstellar space. Most of these were lost forever, but a few fell into stable orbits around some of the suns in GalCop space. Baked by the heat of the sun, they grew, and grew, and grew.

Today, they are known to the GalCop races simply as Giant Space Pizzas and at up to 5Km in diameter these inert and harmless entities are quite impressive. They remain there to this day, a curiosity to the spacefarers that come across them, and a testament to the folly of the Trumbles' catastrophic attempts to feed their burgeoning population all those years ago.

Version History

v1.0 Released 2011/03/01

History and Warning

The JellyBaby Dispenser is a 'Joke' OXP and was 'invented' following numerous instances on the Forum where threads were derailed by these little Devils. As they were spamming the Forum, it seemed only fitting that they should be spamming Commanders' ships as well.
The JellyBaby Dispenser will supply JellyBabies regularly and frequently, and if left un-checked they will take over your ship. In this (and other ways!) they are much like Trumbles.
They sound Trumble-like, and the Dispenser will draw food from your hold to continue making them. Biologically, they are so similar to Trumbles that your ship's computer might even mis-identify them as Trumbles.
Thankfully any infestation can be dealt with in the same way, as JellyBabies do not tolerate heat, and will readily 'melt' if the ship they are infesting stays near the sun long enough to start overheating.

Smivs'Shipset Version 4.2

Smivs'Shipset - so much more than just another re-texture set. "See them hurt, watch them die!"

This Oolite Expansion Pack (OXP) is a replacement texture set giving the ships in Oolite a new 'realistic' look. This is achieved by applying new textures (skins) to the original models which improve the look of the game while preserving authenticity and originality...the ships are the same shape, but much better looking!

The models used are the original models from Oolite v1.65 which have been adapted for use in Smivs'Shipset. These base models have been enhanced with the addition of gun and engine sub-entities.

Smivs'Shipset v4.2 includes additional versions of many of the standard ships for more variety. In total, there are over 40 different ship textures.

This OXP features some beautiful lighting effects which do not require shaders. The ships have illuminated cockpit and porthole windows, strobing Navigation Lights and other additional lights, plus 'glow' effects for the radiators/heat-exchangers and the ships' hulls also have realistic shininess and reflectiveness. Several ships also feature hull spotlighting.
The Thargoid Warships have the alternating red/green colour as described in the Wiki.

The Galcop Viper Interceptor, Python Blackdog (pirate) and Python Trader, FerDeLance Hunter and FerDeLance Executive, Boa Trader, Anaconda Trader, Adder Scavenger, Krait Hunter, Viper Pursuit, Asp Pirate and the Constrictor are all added to the Start-up demo ships display.

Special features

Smivs'Shipset v4.2 is the first Oolite ship set with dynamic textures which change in game to show NPC damage during combat. If you or an NPC shoot-up another ship to the point where its shields fail and it starts throwing sparks, the texture is changed 'on the fly' to one with visible damage - you will actually see laser scoring and holes punched in the hull.

If the ship under attack has an escape capsule and the pilot ejects, the ship will then go derelict. As the reactor shuts down the engine glow fades and the ship starts to tumble gently in space. As it tumbles, it loses all power. The interior and external lights fade out, and finally the ship loses its navigation strobes.

Click on the image below to view a full-size version in a new tab.

Another exciting visual feature of v4.2 is enhanced death effects. Normally, when you kill another ship you get a brief and rather weedy little flash. With Smivs'Shipset v4.2 when a ship is destroyed, it will explode dramatically, and for a split second you may even see large chunks of burning wreckage before they also explode.

Also included in Smivs'Shipset is a kit which will allow you to make a custom texture for the player Cobra 3. This is a very easy process and will allow you to personalise your own Cobra 3 if you want to. Full instructions are included.

You can see all the ships here on Youtube, and a demonstration of the Thargoid Warship colour-change effect can be seen here .

Bugfix released on 22nd May 2010. There was a slight error in the shipdata.plist on the Standard Definition edition of the Shipset which caused the exhaust flumes on the Boa Class Cruiser to be in the wrong position, and the Exhaust flume of the Boa to be far too big. This has now been corrected in Version 1.1. The High Definition edition is OK (I'd changed them here during testing, but forgot to transfer the changes to the SD edition).

v1.0 - First released on 21st May 2010.

Star-Jelly OXP

Starjelly image

StarJellys are strange translucent creatures that float freely in space. Un-able to move by themselves they are normally found in asteroid fields where they get trapped by the micro-gravity of the asteroids. Star-Jellies live and grow by absorbing Quirium, and are very fragile. If attacked or disturbed they tend to explode in a Quirium explosion, so the wise spacer keeps well away from them and never disturbs them. There have been reports of mysterious Quirium explosions seen near suns in various systems, and it is thought that a stray shot by a careless miner working near StarJellys may be the cause of these.

Most commonly seen is the female which is thought to be twice as common as the larger and more colouful male, and you will also often see Star-Jelly larvae. Star-Jellies produce blue eggs, and these pose a danger to unwary spacers as they are extemely small and hard to see, but just like the larvae and adults will explode in a quirium blast if attacked or hit.

Fortunately all Star-Jellies, including their eggs, will show up on a ship's scanner, and a recent software update has allowed them to have a grey scanner flag to distinguish Star-Jellies from inanimate objects such as cargo pods and rocks.

You can see the Star-Jellies here on SmivsTV.

ToughGuys 4 OXP (TG4)

N.B. ToughGuys 4 was developed for Oolite v1.77.

As an experienced Commander, you might feel that the 'enemy' are getting too easy to deal with, so you can use this OXP to re-balance the game, giving you tougher adversaries more suited to your combat skills.
This OXP affects the level of equipment fitted to many NPC ships and the skill of their pilots.
Pirates will have a slightly increased chance of more defensive equipment such as shield boosters and ECMs. Some will have weapons upgrades as well, with the standard beam laser being replaced by military lasers on some ships, and most will have aft lasers. These may be pulse, beam or military grade. Many pirate pilots will also be much more skillful than 'core game' pirates to reflect the fact that they are seasoned fighters with a wealth of combat experience.
Many hunters will also be upgraded, with extra equipment and better weapons. These upgrades may be superior to that of the pirates due to the hunters' improved access to GalCop stations and supplies. Some will also be very skillful due to the experience they have gained pursueing their chosen profession.
Traders and escorts also get improvements. Their combat skills may not be quite up to the high standard of the 'professional' fighters, but this is compensated for by better access to equipment and more incentive to have well equipped ships. They will have the highest chance of extra defensive equipment, and will also frequently have upgraded weapons, both fore and aft.

Versatility and Compatibility:

Unlike previous versions of this OXP, there is a single download file available. The download contains the 'base' OXP plus a selection of 'shipdata-overrides.plist's, one of which will need to be added to the OXP before use.
The standard plist is for use with the built-in 'core' ships. This will also be needed if 'addition' ship sets from Griff and Smivs are used with the core ships. There are also two plists available if the 'replace' version of either Griff's ships or Smivs'Shipset are used.
Full instructions are included in the download, and should be carefully read before use.
This OXP has not been specifically tested with other ship sets but should work with any set which uses the default names - use the standard plist in this case.
Please report any incompatibilities via the ToughGuys 4 thread on the Bulletin Board.

Extra Mayhem plug-in

dogs and constrictor

Click on image for full size version.

There is also a plug-in OXP included in the download file. This 'Extra Mayhem' OXP adds more pirates and more ships.
Half of all systems visited will be unchanged, but 4 in 10 systems will have an extra gang of pirates somewhere between the witchpoint and the planet, and in 1 in 10 systems there will be a pirate ambush at the witchpoint, and a couple of police ships will also be approaching the witchpoint area, but will be out of scanner range when you arrive.
'Pitbull' and 'Rottweiler' pirate command ships (modified Boas and Boa Class Cruisers) will also appear occassionally. These are very tough and well armed and will have a small flotilla of smaller pirate ships escorting them.
You may also rarely see a GalCop Police Constrictor in Anarchy and Feudal systems, an attempt to control the pirate menace in these dangerous systems.

WonderWorm OXP

Wonderworm

A new and very different crimewave hits GalCop space. Criminals start to appear through a temporal wormhole from the 39th Century, bringing their advanced technology with them to plunder the past.
By using subspace portal technology these Time Raiders can build incredible spaceships. The bulk of the ship exists in subspace, and is accessed via a small vessel in normal space. The small vessel houses the subspace portal unit which in effect makes it the hull of the larger ship. In practice the ship is up to one hundred times bigger inside than it looks on the outside.
The Time Raider's ship of choice is the humble Worm, as they are cheap and easy to come by, attract little attention, and if things do go wrong, they make a small, difficult target.
Although outwardly tiny these Time Raider ships are awesomely powerful, with massive energy reserves and powerful shields. They are very well armed with powerful laser arrays and are normally fitted with several plasma turrets. Their future technology also allows them to remotely detect and disable virtually every WMD known in GalCop space. They are all but indestructible.
Inevitably a rare few of these ships are recovered, either when the Time Raider is apprehended or killed, or as a result of some accident or mishap. GalCop immediately requisition these ships if one is found or recovered, and strips them of much of the technology which is then sent to GalCop research facilities for further study. However as GalCop are expected to cover their costs overall, the ships are then sold on through a handful of approved secure traders on TL 14 and 15 worlds.
Sold as the WonderWorm, these vessels may not have all the features of the original ship. In particular the advanced lasers and high-tech remote weapons disabling equipment will have been removed, as would any cloak or jammer that was originally fitted. Although in its infancy the subspace technology is known, so for practical reasons these vessels are permitted to retain their subspace features for retail sale. They are priced at 2.5 million Credits but you do get a lot for your money. Standard equipment includes Fore and Aft Military lasers, a Naval Energy Unit, Military Shielding, Fuel Injection and ECM, and an Advanced Space Compass with Multi-targeting system. The WonderWorm has a combat-biased custom HUD, and all other equipment options are available.

An epic mission OXP which takes you through all eight galaxies twice in an attempt to thwart a full-scale Thargoid invasion of GalCop space. You will battle Thargoids at almost every stage and will be confronted by some of the most fearsome ships and weapons the Thargoids have ever used.

There will also be times when you have to deal with other, more human foes as well, and sometimes it will seem that even the Ooniiverse itself has turned against you.

You will need to be a tough Commander to complete this mission and must think on your feet often. You will find yourself in some very challenging situations and will make (and lose) some good friends during the course of this mission.

Even if you are able to stop the invasion your task is not complete, as you will need to track down and destroy the Thargoids' most terrifying weapon the Annihilator in a cataclysmic final showdown.

YellOo Cabs v2.0

This Oolite Expansion Pack (OXP), developed by Smivs, adds 'YellOo Cab' Taxis to the Ooniverse. These will often be seen ferrying passengers around and between systems, and the YellOo Cab is also player-buyable.

HISTORY
The Retila Shipyard Co-operative (RSC) is a shady organisation consisting of various Mafia, Triad and Pirate groups, who were brought together by the legendary super-criminal Kran Hoftus to build and market the notorious 'Contractor' uber-ship. Although the ship is not illegal, GalCop is well aware of the Shipyard's dubious ownership and is known to monitor the situation closely. As time passed RSC realised that they would benefit from having a 'legitimate' business arm to maintain an air of respectability and of course for money-laundering and other nefarious purposes.
However, no one in their wildest dreams would have expected them to start manufacturing Taxis, but that is exactly what happened. The RollyJoger TaxiWorks was established to manufacture the Contract-a-Cab after the RSC (somehow!) won the contract to build a fleet of luxury Limo-Taxis for the prestigious YellOo Cab Company. Also surprising was their decision to use an adapted version of the Contractor spaceframe as the basis for their Taxis, but this actually made a lot of sense, as the ship was the right size and shape, all the development work had already been done, and it turned out to be both very adaptable, and ideal for cost-effective mass-production.

However of necessity the specifications are very different. Gone is the expensive organic hull plating in favour of steel. The three Muon-Schism drives have been replaced by a single Quark-Oscillation engine giving a top speed of 3.6 LM. The Contract-a-Cab has three Energy Banks with a 'medium' re-charge rate of 3. Two missile slots are fitted.
The Contract-a-Cab comes as standard with the basic equipment needed to perform its role, with standard Escape Capsule, Fuel Injection, Fuel Scoops, Heat Shielding, forward Beam Laser (and a rear mount), and of course a special luxury Passenger Berth which also incorporates a passenger Escape Capsule. All other equipment options are available.
However the Contract-a-Cab has NO hold or cargo extension available. The Passenger Berth is an integrated aspect of the design and cannot be removed to release cargo space.

For anyone looking to operate a YellOo Cab Co franchise, the Contract-a-Cab will excel at providing a safe, comfortable, reasonably fast and reliable means of plying your trade. Base price is 275 450Cr (including 100 000Cr GalCop Taxi Licence fee).
